I’m glad you love your fins and are noticing the difference with your hip and leg. I’m sorry about the irritation on your ankle. The fins should just lay softly along your foot during the down kick (so you hardly notice it). So I suggest trying the fins a little higher up your leg to stop them hitting the top of your foot on the down-kick.

Are your feet and ankles flexible enough to point your toes reasonably well? Swimmers often do stretches to improve their toe pointing, so you might like to try this too.

Petroleum jelly (Vaseline) might help reduce the rubbing. Swimmers use that quite a lot with foot flippers. Another alternative is to use an old sock as you mention. You can cut the foot off it so it just goes underneath the part of the strap that is rubbing. You can also get thin wetsuit socks. I hope this helps you.
