Snorkeling & scuba: below knee amputation fins

Larry, a certified scuba diver with a below knee amputation, finds his shinfinTM fins great for snorkeling. He straps one fin over a silicone liner on his stump and the other fin in the usual position on his other leg. This is because the fins don’t need to be at the same height on each leg. His fins allow him to function even better in the water than he had hoped for. So this motivates him to train in the pool and get back into the ocean again.

Larry’s review from Kansas, USA

“This was our first cruise since my accident which resulted in a below the knee amputation of my left leg. I am PADI certified as a scuba diver and have come to love snorkeling with my wife. When we got to Cozumel we had a beach entry snorkeling trip set up and the fins worked great. I was able to function as well or better than I had hoped for. All in all I can’t thank you enough for a well thought out product at a very reasonable price. I will begin training in the pool and can’t wait to get back in the ocean.”

Larry’s review: Below knee amputation fins for snorkeling & scuba

“Thanks for remembering my dates of my cruise. As I told you, this was our first cruise since my accident which resulted in a below the knee amputation of my left leg. I am PADI certified as a scuba diver and have come to love snorkeling with my wife. I am a retired firefighter and have no ability to give up.”

“That being said I was very disappointed when I started looking for fin options for my stump. That is, until I happened on your product on the internet. I ordered a set of shinfinTM fins from you in January and received them about 2 weeks later. I sat down and worked out the fitting issues for my stump, using your suggestion of an old silicone liner under the fin. After I had the fit worked out, there were actually no available pools to try it out before our trip.”

“When we got to Cozumel we had a beach entry snorkeling trip set up and the fins worked great. I was able to function as well or better than I had hoped for. I did get very tired after a short time but I believe that was 5 years out of the water, definitely not anything to do with the fins.”

“All in all I can’t thank you enough for a well thought out product at a very reasonable price. I will begin training in the pool and can’t wait to get back in the ocean. Many thanks.”

I am very pleased to hear how well you got on with your pair of shinfin™ fins, for snorkeling on your cruise trip. Also great to hear how they have encouraged you to train in the pool, to strengthen up for more ocean swimming too.

Can I ask a favour please? Would you mind if I put some extracts from your emails on the website? If you have some photos/videos that you would be happy for me to put on the website, then that would be very helpful for other people to see too.

“Yes, of course you can.”

Thank you for your kind permission. Personal recommendation is very important to help a new product like this along, so I really appreciate it.

I’d be interested to know what strokes you will be swimming for your pool training. Do you swim freestyle and backstroke, and perhaps butterfly too? Do you ever swim kick only, perhaps with a kickboard? Or mainly full stroke legs and arms?

I think your overall mobility will improve too, for walking etc., as a result of pool training with your shinfin™ fins. We get a lot of great feedback like this from people with amputations.

I’d love to hear how you progress please, whenever you have a moment to email me. I am here to help you get the best from your fins. All the best for your pool training and ocean swimming.

Conclusion

You will find shinfinTM fins great for snorkeling and scuba diving, with above or below knee amputation(s). You can strap the fins directly onto your stump(s), or over silicone stump liner(s). Fit the other fin in the usual position on your other leg. You don’t need to fit the fins at the same heights on each leg. The fins will allow you to function better in the water, perhaps even better than you hope for. So they can help you to build your motivation for pool training and getting back into the ocean again.

shinfinTM fins work with many types of amputaions. These reviews illustrate a transtibial amputee snorkeling and pool swimming and a below knee amputee exercising her residul limb. Related reviews show a bilateral below knee amputee exercising his whole body and an above knee amputee snorkeling, scuba diving and pool swimming.
