Less muscle & ankle strain: bodyboarding fins

Bodyboarding with shinfinTM fins gives Wendy less lower leg muscle fatigue and less ankle strain than any foot fins she has ever used. From her occupational therapist viewpoint, she understands and feels these therapeutic biomechanical advantages.

Wendy’s review from San Francisco, USA

“Overall, I LOVE them! Really takes the strain off your ankles for kicking power. I feel far less lower extremity fatigue and strain when I use them. I still think shinfinTM fins superior to any fins I have ever used.”

Wendy’s review: Reduced ankle strain & less muscle fatigue bodyboarding fins

“Thanks for following up. I do have some comments. Overall, I LOVE them!”

“First off, I am an occupational therapist. So I have a special appreciation for the ergonomics and biomechanical advantages of the shinfinTM design. Really takes the strain off your ankles for kicking power. I feel far less lower extremity fatigue and strain when I use them. For lap swims in a pool they are perfect. I think they would be also be great for snorkeling.”

“That being said, I have a couple of things that I have found somewhat problematic. First off, even if you get the straps wet, they are not easy to fasten. Quite difficult, actually. Now, I must add here that I have mild arthritis in my hands. So I am more sensitive than others might be, but I feel it a design area that could use some improvement. Secondly, bodyboarding in really rough waves, I do find that the fins can get turned sideways on my shins and I need to reposition them quite frequently.”

“But, even with those comments, I still think shinfinTM fins superior to any fins I have ever used. I hope you find my feedback useful. Thanks for taking the time to ask for it.”

We get a lot of feedback like this, stemming from the biomechanical advantages of the fins being connected to the lower leg. It is good to have your professional feedback too.

I think I can also help you with the straps. That in turn should stop the fins sliding in the surf. I’m sorry the straps aren’t as intuitive as I would like. By following the tips we sent with the fins, each fin usually takes about 30 seconds to put on, 5 seconds to take off, and a few seconds to tighten or loosen whilst wearing the fins. Here are the fitting tips and alternate fitting for weak fingers to help you. It can take a few goes to get accustomed to the straps but it will be worth it. Please let me know how you get on.

“Thanks for the extra tips.”

Conclusion

Bodyboarding with shinfinTM fins reduces your ankle strain and lower leg muscle fatigue compared to foot fins. You need to follow the fitting tips carefully to ensure they are fitted securely on your leg, especially for bodyboarding in really rough waves. If your fingers are weak or arthritic (like Wendy’s), there is also an alternate fitting method. Please also see the entire fin tips section to get the best from your fins.

If you are a physiotherapists or occupational therapist (like Wendy), you will quickly appreciate the therapeutic benefits of shinfinTM fins for aquatic therapy and aqua aerobics exercises too.
