Dawn’s ten year old son has a partial foot amputation and sensitive skin from burns, so he loves his shinfinTM fins for learning to swim. Because his skin is very thin and sensitive due to his burns, he wears the fins over socks. Most important, as they strap above his ankles, his feet are free. That is why his foot amputation doesn’t affect the fin operation, unlike with regular foot fins. So his swim instructor sees a big improvement in his swimming.
Dawn’s review from Currimundi, Australia
“My son [age 10] loves the fins. Because of his partial amputation of one foot and loss of muscles due to burns, he has always had trouble kicking. With shinfinTM fins he is able to kick very well. His teacher, who told us about the fins, has seen a big improvement in his swimming. Thanks, Dawn.”
Dawn’s review: Learn to swim fins for foot amputation & sensitive skin
“shinfinTM fins are extra help for my son who has partial foot amputation from burns, to help him learn to swim.”
Thank you again for your order. Can you please describe your son’s amputation so I can give you some extra tips.
“My son [age 10] loves the fins. Because of his partial amputation of one foot and loss of muscles due to burns, he has always had trouble kicking.”
“With shinfinTM fins he is able to kick very well. The only thing we have had to do is put socks on him under the fins because the straps rub a bit.”
“His teacher, who told us about the fins, has seen a big improvement in his swimming.”
Many thanks for your reply Dawn. That is great to hear that your son loves his fins and there has been a big improvement in his swimming. Say well done to him from me please.
I’m sorry that the fins were rubbing him a bit, but it seems you have found a solution with the sock. Petroleum jelly (e.g. Vaseline) might be another option for him. Where were they rubbing?
“The reason they rub is because my son’s skin is very thin due to the burns, and breaks down very easily.”
All the best to you and your son. I am really pleased that the fins are helping his technique.
Even if you have a foot amputation and/or sensitive skin, you will love shinfinTM fins for many water activities, including learning to swim. This is because they strap above your ankles, so your feet are free. Foot amputations don’t affect the operation of the fins, unlike with regular foot fins. Swim instructors will see big improvements in your swimming.
If your skin is very thin and sensitive, for example due to burns or age, then as also shown in this other review, you can wear the fins over socks. Furthermore, shinfinTM fins work well with many other types of amputations too. For example, see this review from a bilateral below knee quad amputee.
