Weight loss rehabilitation fins: below knee amputee

Tim swims freestyle with shinfinTM fins for rehabilitation and weight loss, to get the best workout to recover his fitness, following his below knee amputation. His fins have helped him lose a tremendous amount of weight. They have improved his hip abduction too. This is because his strong, lightweight shinfinTM fins are powered from his hips, using the stronger muscles in his thighs, buttocks and torso.

Tim’s review from Rifle, USA

“Over the past year, I have been swimming a lot for rehabilitation after having a BK (below knee) amputation on my right leg. I am swimming four miles a week at a recreation center here in Colorado. This regimen is the best way to get back in shape for an amputee! I have lost a tremendous amount of weight swimming. And the shinfinTM fins help with hip abduction as well! I am currently swimming freestyle. Thanks again, and I will stay in touch.”

Tim’s review: Rehabilitation & weight loss fins for below knee amputee

“Over the past year, I have been swimming a lot for rehabilitation after having a BK (below knee) amputation on my right leg.”

“I am swimming four miles a week at a recreation center here in Colorado. This regimen is the best way to get back in shape for an amputee! Otherwise, it would take forever if I was doing this on a stationary bike or walking. I have lost a tremendous amount of weight swimming. And the shinfinTM fins help with hip abduction as well!”

“I bought many spare straps from you because they are coming from Australia, so I might as well, plus the strap on the BK (below knee) stump tends to wear out quicker. Thanks again, and I will stay in touch.”

It is wonderful to hear how your shinfin™ fins have helped you over the last year with your rehabilitation after your below knee amputation. Yes, they really do help you get back in shape and lose weight, as you say. They also help with knee, back and hip mobility, including hip adduction and abduction, as you noticed.

Can I ask a favour please? Would you mind if I put some extracts from your emails on the website? I like the way you have written and I think it would be useful for other people to read what you have said.

“I think it would be great if you put my testimonial on your website, and look forward to seeing it on shinfin.com! Thanks again.”

Thank you for your kind permission. Personal recommendation is very important to help a new product like this along, so I really appreciate it.

I’d be interested to know what strokes you are swimming for your rehabilitation. So, do you swim freestyle and backstroke, and perhaps butterfly too? Also, do you ever swim kick only, perhaps with a kickboard, or mainly full stroke legs and arms?

And how has your overall mobility improved for walking etc. as a result of your rehabilitation swimming with your shinfin™ fins? I’d love to hear please.

Tim

“In response to your questions, I am currently swimming freestyle, and I did swim competitively as a young kid in California. I have the right form, and I am working on the kick flip!”

“I seem to have adapted to the prosthesis like it was meant for me. So I walk fine. I will send you some pictures in the summer.”

By “kick flip” were you talking about flip turns? So how have you been going with your turns? With shinfin™ fins you just need to go into flip/tumble turns a little bit harder. Keep your knees fairly straight until the fins lift out of the water. So this can be a training benefit too. For normal (non-flip) turns, bring your knees up and forward as you come to the wall. For flip turns, and normal turns, they don’t interfere with your push-off from the wall (unlike foot fins).

Conclusion

Swimming freestyle, backstroke or butterfly with shinfinTM fins, is great for rehabilitation and weight loss. They give you strong workout to recover your fitness after injuries and amputations, such as above knee and below knee amputations. shinfinTM fins help you lose weight and improve your hip abduction and adduction. Strong and lightweight, they are powered from your hips, so they use the stronger muscles in your thighs, buttocks and torso.
